I\u2019ve been managing people for years\u2026 but I never got the time to really learn the nuances\u2014the things that make all the difference.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That\u2019s what one of my coachees told me recently. And it hit a nerve.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A recurrent story from the field<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As a leadership coach and trainer, in my workshops participants often react with huge interest when I introduce a practical tool\u2014like how to give honest feedback, hold a boundary, or create clarity in delegation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They ask: \u201cWhy has no one ever told me this before? Did my boss complete the training?&#8221; The answer? No, your boss did not undergo this training because he\/she is expected to <strong>lead without ever preparing.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-07be207794823a79a2cd3faa8ceb90bf\">The global cost of manager &#8220;by opportunity&#8221;<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shocking numbers<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Anglo-Saxons are often cited as an example when it comes to leadership.Well, In 2023, a report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/about-cmi\/media-centre\/press-releases\/bad-managers-and-toxic-work-culture-causing-one-in-three-staff-to-walk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/about-cmi\/media-centre\/press-releases\/bad-managers-and-toxic-work-culture-causing-one-in-three-staff-to-walk\/\"><strong>Chartered Management Institute (CMI)<\/strong> and <strong>YouGov<\/strong> <\/a>revealed that:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>82% of UK managers<\/strong> are promoted without formal training<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>1 in 3 workers<\/strong> have left a job due to toxic workplace culture<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Half<\/strong> of those with ineffective managers plan to quit within a year<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In 2023, DDI Global Leadership Forecast the report highlighted that :<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0<strong>87% of organisations<\/strong> promote people without preparing them<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Only <strong>40%<\/strong> of frontline leaders receive structured development<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ddiworld.com\/research\/global-leadership-forecast-2025\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ddiworld.com\/research\/global-leadership-forecast-2025\">The report<\/a> shows also that <strong>there are significant gaps between the skills leaders need and the development<\/strong> organizations provide. While leaders overwhelmingly recognize the importance of future-oriented capabilities, their actual preparation falls short. How can you ensure your managers can fulfill these responsibilities without proper training?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These are the skills leaders say they need and in blue the proportions leaders who received the training.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dominique-ara.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025.05.20_1624.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Invest!<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So as we can see, the investment in actual leadership development remains low. Corporations allocate significant funds to keep their software up to date to avoid threats, but they do not invest enough in their people! It&#8217;s the corporate responsibility to train their employees properly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><br \/>The World Economic Forum&#8217;s latest report shows that despite the fact that <em>leadership and social influence<\/em> are in the <strong>top 5 critical skills<\/strong>, the investment in actual leadership development remains low.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The shift: From technician to leader<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Line Managers often promote people based on technical performance. Yet, leading people is an entirely different job. It requires:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The ability to give feedback that doesn\u2019t destroy trust and agencies of the person<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The skill to energize others\u2014not just get things done<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Awareness of power and responsibility<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Emotional agility under pressure<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These aren\u2019t innate traits. They\u2019re learnable skills.<br \/>But only if you give managers the <strong>space and support to grow<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It\u2019s not too late to lead intentionally<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you\u2019re managing a team and you\u2019ve never been trained\u2014you\u2019re not alone.<br \/>You didn\u2019t fail. You were set up without the tools.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But the good news?
